Global Peace Index: Uzbekistan ranked 60th for safety and stability

Uzbekistan has been ranked 60th out of 163 countries in the annual Global Peace Index (GPI) published by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

The GPI assesses peace using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, including levels of crime, internal and external conflicts, political stability, militarization, defense spending, and more. The index is scored on a scale from 1 to 5, where a lower score indicates a more peaceful and secure country. With a score of 1.96, Uzbekistan ranks in the top half of the global list.

Among Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan ranks the highest at 59th place. Tajikistan is in 72nd place, Kyrgyzstan in 78th, and Turkmenistan in 83rd.

Among other post-Soviet states, both improvements and declines in rankings were recorded. Armenia dropped from 66th to 77th place, Azerbaijan from 95th to 106th, and Georgia from 94th to 100th.

Ukraine and Russia were ranked among the world’s least peaceful countries, taking 159th and 156th places respectively. Yemen remains at the bottom of the index, plagued by ongoing armed conflict, humanitarian crisis, and political instability.

According to the report, the global level of peace deteriorated in 2024, with the average score declining by 0.56%. The authors of the index note rising geopolitical tensions, the development of military technologies, armed conflicts, and internal political and economic crises as contributing factors to worsening conditions in 97 countries.

The top five most peaceful countries are Iceland (1st), Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and Singapore – nations characterized by high levels of safety, low crime rates, absence of international and domestic tensions, and stable governance institutions.
