Shavkat Mirziyoyev congratulates Friedrich Merz on election as Chancellor of Germany

In his message, the president emphasized that Uzbekistan attaches high priority to deepening its multifaceted and long-term cooperation with Germany, which he described as a traditional and time-tested partner within the European Union.

President Mirziyoyev expressed confidence that under Chancellor Merz’s leadership, the new German government would continue to strengthen the country's position as one of the world’s leading democratic and economically advanced nations.

“It is my firm belief that, through our joint efforts, we will be able to give fresh momentum to our partnership in priority areas such as the green economy, investment, infrastructure, technology, education, healthcare, the environment, and other fields,” the message stated.

The day before, the Bundestag elected Christian Democratic Union leader Friedrich Merz as Germany’s new chancellor on the second vote. He becomes the 10th Federal Chancellor in the country's history.

Merz received 325 votes, surpassing the required absolute majority of 316. A total of 289 lawmakers voted against his appointment.
