Estonia expels hundreds since January, including 23 Uzbek nationals

Since the beginning of 2025, a total of 366 people – including 23 citizens of Uzbekistan – have been expelled from Estonia under orders to leave the country, according to data from the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board, cited by ERR. The largest groups among those deported were citizens of Russia (108), Moldova (37) and Ukraine (24).

The report notes that most of those ordered to leave departed voluntarily, while some were forcibly removed.

In addition to Russian, Moldovan, Ukrainian and Uzbek citizens, people from Georgia, India, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil and Belarus were also among those banned from staying in Estonia.

The reasons for deportation vary – from violations of migration laws to other grounds specified by legislation.

On 30 July, Uzbekistan launched the charitable campaign Vatanga qaytarish (“Return to the Motherland”). Running until 30 August, the campaign aims to repatriate Uzbek women and children held in deportation centers in eight countries, including the United States, South Korea and Russia.

As a reminder, under a government resolution adopted in May, citizens deported for committing offences abroad will be returned at the expense of the Migration Fund, with the costs later recovered from them. Such individuals will not be issued a biometric passport for foreign travel for two years and will be barred from using official employment services to work in developed countries for up to one year.
