Sri Lanka offers Uzbekistan access to its seaports

Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka (resident in Islamabad), Alisher Tukhtaev, met with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe, to discuss ways to deepen bilateral economic cooperation.

The two sides emphasized the rapid growth of trade and economic ties and the need to significantly increase mutual trade volume. During the meeting, the Sri Lankan side proposed that Uzbekistan make use of Sri Lanka’s seaports to export its products to the global market, expressing readiness to provide all necessary conditions to facilitate this.

Minister Samarasinghe noted that the current global economic landscape has compelled many countries to reassess their foreign trade strategies, seek out new markets, and develop partnerships with promising economies. He underscored Sri Lanka’s interest in expanding close cooperation with Uzbekistan.

Trade between the two countries reached only $6 million in 2024, a figure described as far below the actual potential of both economies. Discussions focused on joint efforts to dramatically increase trade volume and diversify the range of traded goods.

The meeting also explored initiatives to strengthen trade and economic ties, including the organization of business forums, reciprocal delegation visits, expansion of the legal framework, and the creation of a joint working group and intergovernmental commission. Special attention was given to expanding cooperation in logistics, tourism, education, investment, and human capital development.

Following the talks, the two sides agreed to arrange an online session between relevant government agencies to define specific areas of cooperation and develop a practical roadmap.
