Uzbekistan sends diplomatic note to Russia over mistreatment of citizens

Uzbekistan has sent an official diplomatic note to the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding recent incidents in Moscow. Reports of mistreatment of Uzbek nationals in Russia have raised concerns, prompting Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to call for respectful treatment of its citizens and adherence to international human rights norms.

According to the MFA spokesperson, a scheduled monthly meeting on migration issues between Uzbekistan and Russia was held on June 10 at the Uzbek Foreign Ministry. During the meeting, the Uzbek side expressed deep concern over reports of unauthorized inspections, disrespectful behavior, and rough treatment of Uzbek citizens in certain situations in the Russian Federation.

The Ministry emphasized that such actions are incompatible with the spirit of friendly relations between the two countries and stressed the need for concrete measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

"Uzbekistan considers the protection of the rights and interests of its citizens living or temporarily staying abroad as a top priority," the MFA stated.

The statement also noted that the Uzbek Embassy in Moscow is engaged in dialogue with Russian authorities through appropriate diplomatic channels on the issue. Uzbekistan urges adherence to international and human rights standards in the treatment of all individuals.

"In this regard, we call on the relevant Russian authorities to treat Uzbek citizens with respect and to refrain from any actions that may undermine their dignity or honor.

A note has been sent by our Embassy to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the situation in Moscow. The note requests an official explanation of the incidents and stresses that the apparent violations of human rights are unacceptable. It also calls for a legal assessment of the actions of law enforcement personnel involved in these events," the statement added.

The MFA further stated that it would continue to keep the issue under close watch and would take additional measures as necessary.

It should be recalled that on June 8, Russian law enforcement conducted raids in Moscow during which migrants were reportedly subjected to insults and physical force. In a separate operation in Saint Petersburg, around 200 individuals were reportedly forced to sleep on the streets. Uzbekistan’s Migration Agency office in Russia acknowledged the incidents and called on affected Uzbek citizens to come forward for assistance.
