Andijan prison to be relocated outside the city

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has announced that the century-old “cold” building located in the center of Andijan, known as the city’s pre-trial detention facility, will be moved to the outskirts. A modern commercial and service center is set to be constructed in its place.

The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, held a meeting to discuss priority tasks for the comprehensive development of Andijan region. During the meeting, it was noted that Andijan city currently lacks public transportation linking it to the region’s eight surrounding districts.

“Every day, around 80,000 people are forced to travel to the regional center using nearly 20,000 private vehicles. During peak hours, traffic congestion in Andijan reaches levels of 7–8 out of 10. Yet, just one small bus can serve at least 400 passengers daily, replacing the need for about 25 cars,” the presidential press service reported.

Relevant officials were instructed to meet with entrepreneurs, identify new public transport routes, and select suitable bus models that fit the conditions of the region.

Additionally, the head of state introduced another initiative concerning Andijan city.

“In the heart of the city stands Detention Center No. 3, commonly referred to as ‘Andijan Prison.’ As the city continues to grow more vibrant and attractive, it is no longer appropriate for a century-old, bleak facility to occupy such a central location,” the President noted.

As a result, it was decided that the facility will be relocated to the outskirts of the city. In its place, a modern entertainment, shopping, and service complex will be established.
